State Reorganisation : Chronological formation of new states In India

Andhra Pradesh was the first state to be formed on the basis of language in 1953

The State Reorganisation Act 1956 on the recommendation of Fazal Ali Commission- headed by Mr Fazal Ali , Mr K.M. Panikkar and Mr H.N.Kunzru were other members of it .the committee had submitted its report in 1955 on basis of the report several states were formed.The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 remains the single most extensive change in state boundaries since the independence of India in 1947.

  1. Kerala - 1st Nov 1956 from states of Travancore and Cochin.
  2. Karnataka- 1st Nov 1956 from state of Mysore .This state was then renamed Karnataka in 1973.
  3. Maharastra and Gujrat were formed from the state of Bombay in on 1st May 1960.
  4. Nagaland on 1st Dec 1963
  5. Haryana on 1st nov 1966 from Punjab
  6. Himachal Pradesh on 25th Jan 1971
  7. Manipur,Tripura and Meghalya on 21st jan 1972 from Assam
  8. Sikkim on 16th May 1975
  9. Goa on 30th May 1987
  10. Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on 2oth Feb 1987
  11. Uttrakhand,Jarkhand,Chhatisgarh -2000
  12. Telangana - 2nd June 2014
